As of 1 May 2014, the BCA (Building Codes Australia) requires the interconnection of smoke alarms on all new homes from July 1 2014 where more than one alarm is required to be installed. RCD’s & smoke alarms are proven to save lives, which is why they are compulsory in all new buildings.

In Western Australia, all houses that are leased or sold must contain two RCDs protecting the Power & lighting circuits prior to the renewal of a lease or property settlement. The RCDs must provide protection for all lighting and power circuits in the home. One or two mains powered smoke alarms must also be installed, depending on the size and layout of the house.
All leased properties were required to be fitted with RCDs by August 2011 and mains powered smoke alarm(s) by October 2011.
